毎日使っている言葉ほど、由来を知ると「へえ」と声が出ます。「ありがとう」は、もともと“めったにない”という意味でした。そんな小さな驚きを集めて、読む・身につける・待ち受けにする——いろんな形にしています。
The more ordinary the word, the bigger the surprise when you learn where it came from. “Arigatō” once meant “this hardly ever happens.” We gather little discoveries like these — to read, to wear, and to keep close.
言葉の「へえ」— Word Notes
“感謝”ではなく、もとは「めったに無い」。有り・難し＝存在することが、難しい。だから、ありがとう。
Not “thanks” at first, but “this hardly ever happens.” Ari (to exist) + gata (difficult) — something so unlikely it earned a word.
「馳走」は、馳も走も“走る”。冷蔵庫もコンビニもない時代、走り回って集めたもてなし。だから食後に、走ってくれた人へ頭を下げる。
Both characters in chisō mean “to run.” No fridge, no convenience store — a feast was run for. So we bow to the running, not just the food.
ゆく雲、流れる水。とどまらず、こだわらず。やるだけやって、あとは流れにゆだねる。
Drifting cloud, flowing water. Do all you can — then loosen your grip, and trust the flow.
語源は「明らむ」。目を閉じることではなく、ひらくこと。はっきり見て、手をひらく。
Its root is akiramu, “to make clear.” Not shutting your eyes in defeat — opening them, and seeing what’s real.
葉のすきまから漏れる光。地面の光が丸いのは、すきまが“ピンホールカメラ”になって太陽の形を映すから。日食の日は、足元が三日月だらけになる。
Sunlight leaking through leaves. Each gap is a tiny pinhole camera casting the sun — so on an eclipse day, the ground fills with crescents.
本にはさむ“しおり”は、もとは「枝折り」。山道で枝を折って残した、道しるべ。迷わないための、小さな印。
The bookmark’s old name is eda-ori, “branch-folding” — a branch bent on a mountain path so you won’t lose your way.
